Regional Team secures division 1 place

It came down to the last game of the season for a must win game to secure the final Division 1 place for Rookies Regional Team, finishing 7th in the division on goal difference. We also relied on Thoroughbreds who topped the division then to secure a place in the National Premier League at the play offs on 27/28th April. Luckily for Rookies, we have stayed in division 1 for another season. This is exciting news as Division 1 has been a steep learning curve for all the squad and we tend to capatalise on all that we have learnt and come out strong in the 2019/20 season.

Emma Linnett Selected for England

Emma Linnett was one of 14 players from across the country to be chosen for the squad after training and playing for England Nets last year. The Year 12 student said: “When I first found out, I was in shock. It was a really good feeling - being 16 and getting into the under-21s squad.

“My family were really pleased when I told them and I’m looking forward to going to South Africa. I’ve never been anywhere like that before.

“I’ve only been playing Nets since I went for the trial last year. You have to adapt your game.

“As part of the training, they’ve given me suggestions to help me improve, like strengthening exercises to help my core and running exercises to improve my fitness and speed.”

Nets, which was previously known as Indoor Netball, is a version of netball that is fast, highly tactical and is played within nets.

It can be five, six or seven-a-side.

Amy Anderson, second in department for PE at Thomas Clarkson Academy, said: “I am ever so proud of Emma and her achievement in netball. She plays for her local club Rookies and umpires too.

“Emma studies BTEC Sport Level 3 at TCA and always puts in 100 per cent commitment to her studies, so to be playing elite level sport alongside this is an incredible feat for Emma – well done!

“Younger students at TCA look up to Emma and aspire to be like her.”

Emma has been training with England Nets once a month in Birmingham, as well as playing for Rookies Netball Club, the county league and representing the region.

She found out just before Christmas that she’d made the squad and would be travelling to South Africa, but had to keep the news under wraps until the official announcement from England Netball was made.

Emma was part of the squad which competed in the Red Bull Switch Up tournament in London last autumn, with her team reaching the quarter final.

2019 marks 20th year for Rookies Netball Club

Rookies Netball club started 20 years ago, and has gone from strength to strength. Starting as a group of friends who entered a team into the Wisbech Netball League, now boasts 5 senior teams, 5 youth teams and a sucessful partnership with Wisbech Grammar School coaching scheme. Rookies Netball club has 3 level 2 coaches and 2 level 1 coaches,12 umpires, with a number of up and coming coaches and umpiries at beginner level. The sucess of Rookies has grown considerably over the last 5 years mainly due to the determination and passion of club chairman, team manager and head coach, Andrea Eggleton. Andrea Eggleton has coached and played in the first team, seeing winning the wisbech netball league and then over a number of years winning the county premier league. This involved attending a regional play off tournament, which took 2 years for the first team to win succuring promotion to the East Region 3 league. 4 years later the team is starting their first season in Region East 1 league. This has seen a number of new and experienced players join the club and play in the regional team. Andrea Eggleton says' we are looking forward to another sucessful season in Regional 1 and as head coach I am extremely proud of the team and club as as a whole'.
